Lady Dawgs have few answers for Gateway’s solid pitching
The Burnet High School softball team lost to Georgetown Gateway 6-3 on April 8.
Lady Gators (2-5( freshman pitcher Chloe Ellis struck out 10 in seven complete innings against the Lady Dawgs (18-7, 4-3 District 19-4A) .
“They have a great pitcher,” Lady Dawgs head coach Hailey Wooten said. “We didn’t see her the first time we played them until the end of the game. We were able to score six runs off that (other) pitcher.”
While Wooten complimented Gateway’s pitching and defense, she noted the Lady Dawgs also didn’t respond at the plate to force the Lady Gators to make more plays.
“I don’t feel like we hit the ball,” she said. “We did not put the ball in play enough.”
Meanwhile Gateway scored two runs in the first inning, two in the third, and two in the fourth inning. The two runs in the third were a response to Burnet scoring three in the top half of the same inning to erase a one-run deficit. In all, Gateway scored six runs off eight hits. Both teams each had four errors.
“This is what happened,” Wooten said. “They took advantage of missed pitches and were able to hit the ball pretty hard and put pressure on our defense.”
Gateway senior Grace Claycamp had 3 RBIs, while sophomore Charley Walker recorded 2 hits.
Lady Dawg Camrynn Guthrie had 2 RBIs, while Savannah Gomez had 1.
Burnet is preparing for a crucial three-game stretch to end the regular season. The Lady Dawgs are traveling to Salado (2-5) on Tuesday, April 12, then will welcome Taylor (6-1) Thursday, April 14, to Bulldog Diamonds, 1000 The Green Mile, before ending the season at Lake Belton (7-0) on Tuesday, April 19. All games begin at 6:30 p.m.
“A lot will be told (after the Salado contest),” Wooten said. “They have a great program and a great team. I think they haven’t had a couple of things go their way.”
